{"id":1374,"date":"2024-03-12T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/?p=1374"},"modified":"2026-03-23T11:10:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T09:10:48","slug":"ecodesign-directive-prohibition-destruction-unsold-clothes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/ecodesign-directive-prohibition-destruction-unsold-clothes\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecodesign Directive: the prohibition to destroy unsold clothes and shoes will soon be imposed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon <strong>companies in the fashion industry<\/strong> will have to face a <strong>revolution<\/strong>: the entry into force of the <strong>new Ecodesign Directive<\/strong>. In July 2023, the EU Parliament and Council reached an agreement on <strong>the new eco-friendly design regulation<\/strong>, which will replace the current one (2009\/125\/EC).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point it is <strong>only a matter of time<\/strong>: the Ecodesign Directive, or ESPR Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, will presumably <strong>come into force by the end of 2024<\/strong> and will be applied <strong>in all EU states without any national variations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what does the new regulation entail? And above all, what impact will it have on companies in the fashion industry? Let&#8217;s take a look at it together.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cosa-prevede-la-direttiva-ecodesign\">What does the Ecodesign Directive entail?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of the new Ecodesign Directive is to <strong>make sustainable products the norm<\/strong>. Truly sustainable. To do this, goods will need to meet a <strong>number of requirements<\/strong>, particularly including:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>durability<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>reusability<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>reparability<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European agreement aims to <strong>change the logic of a market fuelled by poor-quality and short lifecycle products<\/strong> dominated by planned obsolescence. <strong>Products<\/strong> will have to be of <strong>higher quality, more efficient, easy to maintain and recyclable<\/strong>. The way forward is clear: compliance with the new sustainability requirements should clearly reinforce <strong>circular economy<\/strong>, <strong>reducing the environmental impact<\/strong> of products and <strong>cutting the amount of waste<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, this will all have to be <strong>tracked through a &#8220;Digital Passport&#8221;<\/strong> which will be provided for each product. Anyone will be able to consult it: <strong>consumers<\/strong> will be able to make a more informed choice, <strong>authorities<\/strong> will be able to check compliance with the requirements, and recycling <strong>companies<\/strong> will be able to verify the absence of substances that prevent reuse.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new regulation is applicable to numerous <strong>product categories<\/strong>, from household appliances to clothing. There are <strong>specific provisions<\/strong> for the <strong>fashion industry<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cosa-comporta-la-direttiva-ecodesign-per-il-settore-moda\">What does the Ecodesign Directive entail for the fashion industry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <strong>clothing, footwear, and accessories manufacturers<\/strong> there is an additional provision to comply with. Indeed, with the Ecodesign Directive, a <strong>prohibition to destroy unsold goods<\/strong> will be imposed and implemented 24 months after the entry into force of the European regulation, thus, presumably <strong>in<\/strong> <strong>2026<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What impact will this have on companies in the fashion industry? It will certainly force those that have not already done so to <strong>rethink the entire lifecycle of their products<\/strong>, from the <strong>design<\/strong> to the choice of <strong>raw materials<\/strong>, from the <strong>production processes<\/strong> to the management of <strong>stock<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, unsold products have three possible destinations: destruction, recycling, or the secondary market. Since destruction will no longer be possible, fashion companies will need to find <strong>reliable partners<\/strong> to <strong>solve their stock disposal problem<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exactly what we do at M&amp;A.
