{"id":1385,"date":"2024-04-09T07:10:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T07:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/?p=1385"},"modified":"2024-04-09T07:27:27","modified_gmt":"2024-04-09T07:27:27","slug":"slow-fashion-vs-fast-fashion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/slow-fashion-vs-fast-fashion\/","title":{"rendered":"Slow fashion: is fast fashion running on borrowed time?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to <strong>slow fashion<\/strong>, it would perhaps be improper &#8211; at least for now &#8211; to refer to an actual business model. It is more of an <strong>approach<\/strong> that has developed over the last fifteen years <strong>to oppose fast fashion<\/strong>, both by consumers and by certain brand manufacturers of clothing, footwear, and accessories. An approach that has a <strong>different ethic and awareness<\/strong> regarding <strong>the impact of fast fashion on the environment<\/strong> and not only, if we also consider its social repercussions. But we shall go in order and make a brief summary.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cosa-si-intende-per-fast-fashion\">What does fast fashion mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fast fashion<\/strong> is that part of the clothing industry that produces <strong>new collections<\/strong> &#8211; generally inspired if not poorly copied from haute couture &#8211; <strong>within extremely short time frames and at a really low cost<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we say extremely short time frames, we mean <strong>up to fifty-two new mini collections per year<\/strong>, with practically <strong>one being released on the market every week<\/strong>. This implies going beyond the very concept of the season and <strong>greatly shortens the products&#8217; life cycle<\/strong>. This is without mentioning that <strong>in order to keep the price to the public low<\/strong>, <strong>cheap, low-quality synthetics<\/strong> are chosen so that garments and accessories do not stand the test of time and are <strong>soon to be thrown away and replaced<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-le-conseguenze-del-fast-fashion\">Fast fashion consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>fast fashion business model<\/strong> has been successful for many international fashion giants. Supported also by the <strong>trends<\/strong> that continuously emerge on <strong>social networks<\/strong> and last the time of a like, just long enough to be <strong>superseded and replaced<\/strong> by new trends. This is the perfect dimension to always <strong>offer new collections<\/strong>, aided also by <strong>online shopping<\/strong> with the <strong>possibility of returning products<\/strong>. A truly <strong>disposable fashion<\/strong>, but one that has had <a href=\"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/footprint-fashion-environment\/\">devastating consequences<\/a>, on the environment and beyond.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is now estimated that fast fashion brands produce about twice as much as they did just 20 years ago. And the <strong>92 million tonnes of textile waste generated each year<\/strong>, if this trend were to continue, could become 134 million by the end of the decade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is as far as <strong>waste production<\/strong> is concerned. Then we need to consider <strong>energy consumption<\/strong>, the use of <strong>polluting chemicals<\/strong>, <strong>harmful emissions<\/strong> into the atmosphere, and <strong>microplastics spilled into the sea<\/strong>. It is an extremely high environmental cost, to which the human cost must be added, as <strong>production<\/strong> is <strong>relocated to developing countries<\/strong>, where labour is cheaper and there are <strong>no regulations to protect workers<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-il-movimento-slow-fashion\">The slow fashion movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is fast fashion running on borrowed time? Many would hope so, and the <strong>slow fashion movement<\/strong> is heading precisely in this direction, with <strong>initiatives involving many different stakeholders<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The great <strong>public debate<\/strong> that has become heated in recent years on the subject of <strong>environmental sustainability<\/strong> has led to a new <strong>awareness<\/strong> among <strong>consumers<\/strong>, which has evolved into <strong>different purchasing choices<\/strong>. People are paying more <strong>attention to the quality of the materials<\/strong> their products are made of, so they <strong>last longer<\/strong>, and are demanding <strong>greater transparency<\/strong> on the origin of products too.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This has led and continues to lead fashion <strong>brands<\/strong> to <strong>take up the sustainability cause<\/strong>: studying alternatives for <strong>material selection<\/strong>, reviewing <strong>production processes<\/strong>, seeking <strong>more transparent and reliable partners<\/strong> for their <strong>supply chain<\/strong>, from raw material selection to stock disposal.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, <strong>institutions<\/strong> have not stood idly by and, as we already mentioned, are putting in place precise <a href=\"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/ecodesign-directive-prohibition-destruction-unsold-clothes\/\">regulations concerning the management of unsold stock<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, while still being little discussed by the general public, the <strong>slow fashion approach<\/strong> already has numerous <strong>interpreters and interlocutors<\/strong>.
