But sustainability in the fashion world means many things, some of which contradict each other. So we thought we would gather <strong>some insights into sustainable materials<\/strong> that <strong>clothing, shoe and accessory<\/strong> manufacturers are starting to evaluate and experiment with.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uso-di-tessuti-organici-e-sintetici-riciclati\">The use of organic fabrics and recycled synthetics<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing the use of virgin raw materials is one of the most popular paths taken by fashion industries, which therefore seek to introduce <strong>organic fabrics and recycled synthetics<\/strong> into their production processes. On the other hand, this also encourages <strong>scientific research<\/strong> in implementing <strong>techniques to separate the materials of products sent for recycling<\/strong> and obtain <strong>more exploitable and better quality secondary raw materials<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sperimentazione-di-materie-ecologiche\">Experimenting with ecological materials<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we stated, it is not always easy to establish what is truly sustainable. Take <strong>cotton fibre<\/strong> for example: many people are convinced that it is about as natural as it gets, yet its <strong>environmental footprint<\/strong> is far from negligible when you consider <strong>how much water is needed<\/strong> firstly for its <strong>cultivation<\/strong> and then for its <strong>processing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also why there are so many <strong>alternative materials being experimented<\/strong> with:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>nettle<\/strong> <strong>fibre<\/strong> to replace cotton<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>orange<\/strong> <strong>fibre<\/strong> to replace silk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ground coffee fibre<\/strong> for quick-drying fabrics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, the yield of <strong>cactus leaves<\/strong>, <strong>grape skins<\/strong> discarded by the wine industry, and <strong>mushroom root systems<\/strong> are being tested to make vegan leather. Not to mention all the fibres that are being experimented with based on <strong>cellulose<\/strong> <strong>obtained from agricultural waste<\/strong> such as <strong>banana skins, apple peel and sugar cane<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to invent &#8211; with the help of biotechnology &#8211; <strong>good quality, highly resistant and completely biodegradable fabrics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-impiego-di-tessuti-rigenerativi\">The use of regenerative fabrics<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are <strong>regenerative fabrics<\/strong>? They are <strong>materials<\/strong> that are not only <strong>ecological<\/strong> because they are of plant origin, but also actively contribute to <strong>restoring the environment<\/strong>. One example is <strong>Tencel<\/strong>, which is obtained from <strong>wood pulp<\/strong>. Another is <strong>Pinatex<\/strong>, which is derived from <strong>pineapple leaf fibres<\/strong> and is widely used in leather goods.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such materials can curb the use of non-renewable resources, boost technological development and have a positive impact on ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-approvvigionamento-green\">Green sourcing<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this brings us to <strong>sustainable sourcing<\/strong>, a raw material procurement strategy that <strong>limits environmental impact<\/strong> and <strong>supports local economies and thus local communities<\/strong>. The fashion industry can indeed promote <strong>responsible, sustainable, ethical and fair agricultural practices for workers<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, manufacturers can also boost their reputation and attract environmentally sensitive consumers.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stampa-3d-dei-tessuti\">3D printing of fabrics<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last but not least: <strong>3D printing<\/strong>, which can be applied to numerous fields including &#8211; and why not? &#8211; the production of fabrics. Or rather, <strong>the production of the exact amount of fabric, in the shape and sizes required<\/strong>, with a huge increase in efficiency and minimal material waste.
