{"id":1501,"date":"2024-10-21T07:45:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T07:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/?p=1501"},"modified":"2024-10-21T08:20:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T08:20:32","slug":"new-technologies-recycling-mixed-fibers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/new-technologies-recycling-mixed-fibers\/","title":{"rendered":"New technologies for recycling mixed fibers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheduled to come into force in 2026, the <a href=\"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/ecodesign-directive-prohibition-destruction-unsold-clothes\/\">Ecodesign Directive<\/a> will prohibit all fashion companies from destroying unsold garments. Brands will then have two options: turn to the <strong>secondary market<\/strong> or <strong> <\/strong>proceed to <strong>recycling textile products<\/strong>. The latter option poses a <strong>problem<\/strong> for <strong>mixed fibers containing elastomers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a <strong>mixed fabric<\/strong> undergoes <strong>defibering or chemical dissolution processes<\/strong>, elastomers tend to break down into rubbery formations or stick to other fibers. This ultimately <strong>contaminates the material, which can no longer be recycled<\/strong>, and can even affect the functionality of the machinery used.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research and <strong>technological innovation<\/strong> are essential to <strong>maximize garment recycling<\/strong> and contribute to the circularity of the fashion economy. And finally, something is in the works. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-elastan-nelle-fibre-miste-le-ultime-novita-per-il-riciclo\">Elastane in mixed fibers: the latest innovations in recycling<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent technology that can work on mixed nylon and elastane fabrics has arrived from Denmark. <strong>Researchers at Aarhus University<\/strong> have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2023\/GC\/D3GC02994H\">system that breaks down elastane<\/a>. This makes it possible to <strong>separate elastane chains<\/strong> from other materials and increase their recycling rate.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method developed by the <strong>Technical University of Vienna<\/strong> is different: the researchers have identified a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S092134492300349X?via%3Dihub\">solvent that selectively removes elastane<\/a>, without attacking the other components. Materials such as <strong>polyester and polyamide<\/strong>, which are extensively used for clothing, can be <strong>reclaimed by almost 100 percent<\/strong>, and even the same <strong>solvent can be reused<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important news also comes from Italy. <strong>Next Technology Tecnotessile<\/strong> is a research company that has developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnotex.it\/tecnologia-di-rimozione-di-fibre-elastomeriche-da-tessuti-naturali-e-sintetici\/\">chemical process by which both fiber and elastomer can be reclaimed<\/a>. It is by no means a coincidence that the company is based in the textile district of Prato, where Corertex, our <a href=\"https:\/\/maexportsrl.com\/en\/corertex-textile-reuse-recycling\/\">textile recycling and reuse partner<\/a> is also based. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dove-non-arriva-il-riciclo-arriva-il-mercato-secondario\">Where recycling falls short, the secondary market comes into play<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These early <strong>technological innovations<\/strong> point to further developments for the future.
