Not so much because of the quantities involved \u2013 although they are significant \u2013 but above all because of the <strong>speed<\/strong> at which <strong>product value deteriorates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, <strong>billions of electronic devices are placed on the market<\/strong>. Smartphones, small appliances, vacuum cleaners, toasters, kettles, microwaves: products with a <strong>short life cycle<\/strong>, which are updated rapidly and are being <strong>returned with increasing frequency<\/strong>, becoming a <strong>problem that the supply chain struggles to address openly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-figures-behind-a-global-problem\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The figures behind a global problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest data illustrating the scale of the problem were published in 2024 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recyclind.it\/ita\/4236\/irifiutielettronicicresconocinquevoltepivelocementedelriciclaggio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations Global E-waste Monitor<\/a>. The report highlighted that <strong>e-waste is growing five times faster than it is being recycled<\/strong>. In particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>in <strong>2022<\/strong>, <strong>62 million tonnes of e-waste<\/strong> were generated worldwide, an <strong>82% increase compared with 2010<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>projections indicate a <strong>further 32% increase by 2030<\/strong>, reaching <strong>82 million tonnes<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>only <strong>22.3%<\/strong> of e-waste is <strong>properly collected and treated<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A significant proportion of this <strong>WEEE<\/strong> \u2013 approximately one in four items \u2013 consists of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobuildenergia.it\/approfondimenti\/raee-rifiuti-apparecchiature-elettriche-elettroniche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small electronic devices<\/a>: vacuum cleaners, microwaves, toasters, kettles, shavers, routers and mobile phones. These products are <strong>often disposed of improperly<\/strong>, resulting in the loss of valuable materials and creating <strong>environmental impacts<\/strong> that the production system is still not adequately addressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-specific-issue-of-unsold-electronics\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The specific issue of unsold electronics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The e-waste covered by these statistics concerns products that have reached the end of their useful life. But there is another <strong>category that often remains invisible in the data<\/strong>: <strong>unsold electronics stock<\/strong> \u2013 intact, fully functional products that have never been used and are simply sitting in warehouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The specific issue with unsold electronics is <strong>technological obsolescence<\/strong>. Unlike clothing, an <strong>electronic device loses value with every passing month<\/strong>, not because it physically deteriorates, but because the market moves on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An unsold smartphone model can be worth significantly less after six months than it was when it was first produced. A small appliance replaced by an updated version can become difficult to place through standard sales channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is that <strong>companies managing electronics stock need to act quickly<\/strong>. Every <strong>delay<\/strong>, in addition to generating warehousing costs, represents a <strong>measurable loss of value that is difficult to recover<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-regulatory-context-espr-and-right-to-repair-turn-their-attention-to-electronics\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The regulatory context: ESPR and Right to Repair turn their attention to electronics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regulatory pressure<\/strong> on this sector is <strong>set to increase<\/strong>. On 31 July 2026, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2227720\/eu-right-to-repair-directive-kicks-in-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU Right to Repair Directive<\/a> came into force, requiring manufacturers of electronic devices and household appliances to offer <strong>repairs within a reasonable timeframe and at a reasonable price<\/strong>, provide manuals free of charge and make <strong>spare parts<\/strong> available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ollum.it\/blog\/primo-piano-di-lavoro-ecodesign-espr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPR 2025-2030 Working Plan<\/a>, adopted by the European Commission on 16 April 2025, introduces two horizontal criteria that directly concern electronics: <strong>\u201crepairability requirements\u201d<\/strong>, including the assignment of a repairability score, planned for 2027, and <strong>\u201crequirements on recycled content and recyclability\u201d<\/strong> for electrical and electronic devices, planned for 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The direction is clear. Europe considers <strong>electronic products<\/strong> to be <strong>assets to be preserved and kept in the economic cycle for as long as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies that manufacture or distribute consumer electronics and small appliances will soon have to demonstrate that their products meet stricter standards throughout their entire life cycle, including the stage at which a product becomes surplus stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies that take steps today to <strong>manage their inventory in a structured way<\/strong> are not simply solving a logistics problem: <strong>they are positioning themselves ahead of<\/strong> a regulatory framework that is rapidly taking shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"relocation-as-a-practical-solution\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relocation as a practical solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>solution<\/strong> exists and is already operational.
